Who is behind the Lens
Senior Researcher, NICTA
Karin Verspoor is a Senior Researcher at NICTA's Victoria Research Lab. She serves as the Scientific Director for the Health and Life Sciences Business Area within NICTA and heads a research group in Biomedical Informatics that is primarily focused on text mining of clinical texts and of the biomedical literature. Her research is focused on building tools to help make sense of patient data, whether clinical data or genomics data, by exploiting the wealth of information in unstructured text sources. Karin’s background is in computational linguistics, which aims to build software that tries to "understand" the meaning conveyed by text at some level. Her core language technology research primarily addressed the interaction of linguistic processing with world knowledge (usually represented in some sort of hierarchical, ontological structure). She has worked in a couple of industry start-ups (one successful, one not), government (Los Alamos National Laboratory), and academia (University of Colorado School of Medicine), giving her experience with many different aspects of the innovation pipeline.
