Thomas is a patent attorney in the United States, with a practice focused on pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent litigation and opinion work. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in litigation related to polypeptide production, recombinant clotting factors, cell culture, and pharmaceutical formulations. He has written legal opinions related to CRISPR gene editing, monoclonal antibodies, and medical devices. His peer-reviewed publications include articles on patenting gene sequences, the interaction of genetic and environmental factors in obesity, and morphological development. He currently lives in Chicago.
